Compass Sport Cup Heat – 12th March 2017 – Cwm Lickey
The club had a very successful day today at the Compass Sport Cup heat held at Cwm Lickey, Cwmbran.
The Compass Sport Cup is an inter club competition with this being a qualifier for the final, which is held in October. This year we were up against our local rivals, North Gloucestershire and despite have a few of our top stars missing through illness, injury, running Bath Half Marathon or Inter Counties Cross Country, competing in Taekwondo National championships or appearing in school plays, we manged came away as comfortable winners.
It was good to see Ben Maliphant make the trip from Oxford for a rare orienteering appearance and leading the way with a win on the Brown course and Jane Baldock, beating her younger rivals on the Women Blue course in her quest to get ahead of her sister, Ruth in the British Orienteering Rankings! Clive Hallett had a rare off day, but this did not matter too much, as he was still only beaten by Phil Murray, so we still managed the win on Blue Men. Ifor Powell continued his recent good form, after winning the M45 Welsh Championships last week, he won the Short Brown.
In fact we had the winners on all the courses where we had runners (we had no one on the Orange Boys course), with wins on Men Green for Gavin Clegg in his first club competition appearance back in BOK colours, Alice Bedwell on Women Green, Alison Simmons on Short Green Vets, Millie Stagg on Junior Women Short Green, Jim Bailey on Junior Men Green and Ruby Owen on Orange Girls. Our full list of scorers were:
100 Points - Ben Maliphant, Ifor Powell, Phil Murray, Jane Baldock, Gavin Clegg, Alice Bedwell, Alison Simmons, Jim Bailey, Ruby Owen
99 Points - Clive Hallett, Clare Howes, Charles Daniel, Chloe Potter, Howard Thomas
98 Points - Paul Gebbett, Mark Saunders, Jane Stagg, John Simmons, David Palmer, Oliver Tonge, Jess King, and Ella May Rush
97 Points - Matthew Owen, Helen Kelsey, Rachel Leathwood
The overall final team scores were BOK 2,472 NGOC 2,372
As always everyone who plays runs play their part and it is great to be part of the wonderful club. We had 85 entries across all classes today, which is an amazing club effort. Thanks for everyone who came out and hope you will all be out next time.
Many thanks to South Wales OC for a very well organised event and organising reasonable weather. Full results on SWOC website.
Now onwards to the final which takes place on Sunday 22nd October at Yelverton, Dartmoor so put the date in your diary now. We will most probably run a coach trip for the day from Bath and Bristol. Hopefully we will get everybody out fully fit as I believe we will have a good chance to get the cup back this year.
